Hot & Cold Stone Massage in Corsham
Heated basalt to carry warmth deep into tight muscle, and chilled marble to calm inflammation. Available as hot stone alone, or hot and cold combined.
What stone massage is
Stone massage uses smooth basalt stones, heated in water, as an extension of my hands. Basalt is volcanic rock — it holds heat exceptionally well and gives it up slowly, which is exactly what you want against a tight muscle.
The warmth does a great deal of the work. It softens tissue far more quickly than hands alone, meaning I can reach deeper tension without needing anything like as much pressure. For anyone who wants the results of deep work but not the intensity of it, this is often the answer.
Cold stones are polished marble, chilled rather than frozen. Used on their own or alternated with the hot, they calm inflammation, reduce puffiness and are wonderfully soothing on the face, sinuses and any area that feels hot and overworked.

Hot stone, or hot and cold?
Both are lovely. This is the honest difference between them.
Hot Stone Massage
Heated basalt only. Purely warming, deeply comforting, and the better choice if you feel the cold, want to unwind completely, or simply do not fancy anything chilly.
- Best for deep relaxation
- Best in winter
- Best if you dislike cold sensations
Hot & Cold Stone Massage
Heated basalt alternated with chilled marble. The contrast between the two stimulates circulation more actively and is noticeably better at settling anything inflamed or puffy.
- Best for inflammation and swelling
- Best for sinuses and facial puffiness
- Best for tired, overworked muscles
How the session runs
The stones heat in a water bath while we talk through your consultation. I always test the temperature on my own forearm before a stone touches you, and again on your back before I begin properly — warm should be deeply pleasant, never sharp.
I work with the stones in my hands, gliding them over oiled skin, and place stationary ones along the back or in the palms to hold warmth in an area while I work elsewhere. The rhythm is slower than an ordinary massage, and most people find it hypnotic.
If any stone ever feels too hot, say so immediately and I will swap it. That is not a complaint — it is exactly what I want you to do.
Worth mentioning when you book
Stone massage is not suitable for everyone. Reduced sensation to heat, diabetes with neuropathy, certain circulatory or heart conditions, and pregnancy all need discussion first. Please mention anything relevant so we can choose the right treatment for you.

Stone massage questions
How hot are the stones?
Warm and comfortable, never uncomfortable. They are heated in a water bath and I test every stone on my own skin before it touches yours. If one feels too hot at any point, tell me and I will change it straight away.
Is it as effective as deep tissue?
For deep relaxation and general tension, arguably more so, because heat softens tissue in a way pressure alone cannot. For a specific stubborn knot or an old injury, deep tissue is still the more precise tool. Some people book stones and ask me to work deeper on one area part-way through, which works nicely.
Why add the cold stones?
Cold reduces inflammation and swelling where heat can sometimes increase it. Alternating the two creates a pumping effect in the circulation that neither achieves alone. It is particularly good on sinuses, the face, and anywhere that feels hot and overworked.
Is stone massage suitable for everyone?
Not quite. Reduced sensitivity to heat, diabetes with neuropathy, some circulatory and heart conditions, certain skin conditions and pregnancy all need discussing beforehand. Mention anything relevant when you get in touch and I will advise honestly — sometimes another treatment is simply the better choice.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Yes, and many people do. A common favourite is stones across the back and shoulders, then Indian head massage to finish. Book 75 or 90 minutes and tell me what you would like when you arrive.
